Wherever, Whenever. Acadia National Park

We want this time to be special for everyone, and we encourage all of you to take advantage of the spectacular hikes, carriage trails, restaurants, shopping, nature outings, kayaking etc. Below is a list of Sarah and Eric’s favorite attractions and activities on Mount Desert Island!

Sarah and Eric’s Favorites

Jordan Pond House

Nestled in the heart of Acadia National Park, this restaurant overlooks beautiful Jordan Pond and the Bubbles (pictured above). Jordan Pond is famous for its delicious popovers, breathtaking views, and Maine seafood. A must for any visitor to Mount Desert Island! You’ll find easy access to carriage roads and hiking trails here.

Mount Desert Island Ice Cream

Your trip to MDI won’t be complete without a visit to Bar Harbor, formerly and appropriately known as Eden. This artisanal ice cream shop uses only the purest ingredients and has a variety of new and classic favors. Vegan options are also available. Why not visit a few souvenir shops while you’re at it? Note: we don’t recommend lobster flavored ice cream!

Cadillac Mountain

Cadillac Mountain boasts one of the most beautiful sights on the island. Its vista overlooks Maine’s Schoodic Penninsula and the Porcupine Islands of Frenchman’s Bay. You can drive or hike to the top. Guests who sign up to see the Cadillac sunrise get extra credit! In October-March, you’d be the first in the country to see it!

Ship Harbor

The Ship Harbor trail is quintessential coastal Maine. This easy hike offers beautiful views, opportunities for the young and young at heart to explore tide pools, and a chance to breathe in the sweet and salty Maine air. Appropriate for many ages and abilities.

Otter Cliffs

The Otter Cliffs offer some of the more majestic seaside vistas on the island. Watch and listen to the waves crash dramatically onto the rocky coastline! Easy and difficult hiking trails are accessible from this area of the park, including the famous Precipice Trail.

Mount Champlain

Sarah’s favorite trail on MDI! Need we say more? This moderately difficult trail offers breathtaking views on the way up, so you don’t have to wait until the top to be rewarded! It’s also not too long, either. Can completed in about an hour and a half!

Precipice Trail

Eric couldn’t decide on his favorite trail so he picked this one! Precipice is an exciting trail with open cliff faces and iron rung ladders built into the cliffs. For experienced hikers only, this trail has remarkable views the entire way up!

Carriage Roads

A favorite of Eric’s mom, Patti, these rustic, charming, gravel trails weave through 45 miles of mountainous terrain in Acadia National Park. Used for walking, running, and mountain-biking, these roads are an iconic part of Acadia.

Thurston’s Lobster Pound

Vegetarian, vegan, or omnivore, your trip to Maine isn’t really a trip to Maine without the lobster pound experience! Overlooking the fishing village of Bass Harbor, Thurston’s provides just that! They also have good selections available for non-lobster eaters.

Little Notch Bakery

Located in Southwest Harbor, Little Notch Bakery offers some of the most delicious fresh-baked breads, pizzas, and pastries you’ve ever had. While you’re savoring these baked goods, take some time to explore lovely Southwest Harbor. Visit the Gilley Museum or take a ride on the harbor ferry!

Northeast Harbor

For those of you looking for a more curated shopping experience, we recommend Northeast Harbor. Downtown Northeast features artisanal cafés, upscale clothing boutiques, and fine dining. Visit the azalea gardens if you can! Who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of Martha Stewart with Snoop Dog!

Everything Else

There really isn’t enough space to list all of our favorite places and things to do on MDI. Here’s a list of attractions from DownEast Magazine that are Sarah and Eric approved! You really can’t go wrong. Our hope is for everyone to see and feel the magic of this place that we are so blessed to call a second home.
